Ping Test

Posted on 08:10 by Unknown
Ping Test

Ping is a connectivity test of whether a remote machine is powered on and has an active network interface. It works by sending a small "packet" of data to a server to see if you get a response. The Ping program shows, in milliseconds, how fast the server "replied" to your Ping. It also shows if you lose any packets or "timeout" before receiving the reply from the server. The RTT ( Round Trip Time) is shown in ms (milliseconds) and anything under 100 is very good, up to 400 are typical, over 400 can indicate a problem but can be due to attempting to ping a distant site, say in Australia

How To Ping

In Win95/98/ME go to Start/ Run/ type “command” click OK.
In Win 2000/NT go to Start/ Run/ type “cmd” click OK.
This brings up the command prompt window.
Type “ping ***.***.***.***” ( the IP address you want to test connectivity to)
If successful it will return as per example

If unsuccessful it will return as per example
C:\>ping 212.38.173.200
Pinging 212.38.173.200 with 32 bytes of data
"reply from 212.38.173.4: Destination host unreachable.""reply from 212.38.173.4: Destination host unreachable.""reply from 212.38.173.4: Destination host unreachable.""reply from 212.38.173.4: Destination host unreachable."
Or
"request timed out.""request timed out.""request timed out.""request timed out."
This tells us whether or not the user traffic is able to get through to the target IP address and allows us to troubleshoot connection problems

Error 797

Posted on 07:42 by Unknown
---The connection failed because the modem or other connecting device failed---

Solution:

* Restart your computer and wait until all applications have completely loaded before trying to reconnect.
* Check the connection to make sure it is using our modem – to do this go to “network connections” in control panel and right click on the Onetel BB connection and selecting “properties”. If the modem is installed it will be listed under the “connect using” header. Highlight it and click “OK”
* If your problem has still not been resolved reinstall modem drivers.

Netgear Setup DG-834

Posted on 14:29 by Unknown

Netgear Setup DG-834

The router has a default IP address of 192.168.0.1, and browsing to http://192.168.0.1 over the network connection accesses the web configuration. The first thing the router will ask for is a username and password - which are admin and password. The recommended way to configure the router is via the set-up wizard.

Pressing the Next button results in the router auto detecting a PPPoA connection and determining the standard VPI/VCI of 0/38. At this point the hardest part of the set-up is typing in your username and password. There is an Idle Timeout field which by default is set to five. Unless you want the connection dropping out on you a lot then it is recommended to set a value of zero in this field.

Enter your ISP username and password I cannot see how it can be made much easier. The Test button will launch a pop-up browser window, which if everything is working will browse to http://www.netgear.com as a confidence check that everything is working. To store the settings simply click Apply.

Belkin Router

The Internet light – should be solid green
The Syn light (or Tel.) light – should be solid green
Lan light – indicates if connected to computer with ethernet cable
Wireless light – indicates if connected with wireless USB adaptor
On pointing your web browser at http://192.168.2.1, you should see the router login page below. As no password is set by default, you simply need to click the submit button.

To set up the router, click the Wizard link on the top menu bar.

For a UK ADSL connection, you will need to select PPPoA (Routing mode, for multiple PCs) even if you are only going to connect a single computer, then click the next button.

Type the OneTel Username and Password and verify the Password and type VCI and VPI settings.

Click next again to continue to the next phase in the wizard.

The next step does not actually require the user to enter any information, it is simply a summary screen of what you have entered so far, and allows you to verify that you have the details correct. Click the Apply button to store these settings in the router

It may take up to 5 minutes to save and update the settings. Once completed, you will see, "Connected" on the top right side of the window. Once you see that close this window and open your browser window to go to any website.
